MAINE TURNPIKE
THE MAINE TURNPIKE OPENED IN 1947. WAS THE FIRST SUPERHIGHWAY IN NEW ENGLAND AND THE SECOND MODERN TOLL HIGHWAY IN THE UNITED STATES. FINANCED ENTIRELY BY REVENUE BONDS ISSUED BY THE MAINE TURNPIKE AUTHORITY "TO BE PAID SOLELY FROM TOLL REVENUE." IT WAS THE FIRST MAJOR HIGHWAY BUILT WITHOUT ANY STATE OR FEDERAL FUNDING.
