Deering Oaks, one Portland's most beloved historic parks, was designed by William Goodwin in 1879 Goodwin who served as the City of Portland civil engineer from 1872 to 1892, also develop plans for the Eastern and Western Promenades. These designed landscapes were entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The people Portland will be forever indebted to Goodwin for his outstanding landscape design contributions.
